Small is both sweet and savory on Lesvos...
For the unsuspecting visitor, the small town of Molivos (also
known as Mithymna) on the north side of the island of Lesvos comes
as an unexpected and delightful treat.
Visually impressive on site, it is a village that stretches along a
hilltop crowned by a Venetian castle, a vestige of the island's
varied historical and cultural past. There is an unmistakable
authentic quality about this place with its well-kept traditional
stone houses, cobbled path-ways and architectural diversity.

1. SEA SALT from Kalloni Gulf with mixed spices for
cooking,
2. DOUBLE JARS with sun-dried tomatoes and home made pastas,
3. LOCAL HONEY with walnuts, almonds, pine-nuts & raisings.
At an intersection of these pathways,
the visitor will come
across one of Molyvos' most appealing stores, exactly the kind
people might expect to find here.
Typical of the town's respect for its own traditions, "Evelyn,
Hellenic Traditional Tastes", is a repository of local recipes
and flavors, tastefully designed space filled with jars of unusual
preserves ("sweets of the spoon" as they are called in
Greek), Ouzo and other beverages, pasta, frumenty (crushed wheat
boiled in milk and then sun-dried known as "trohanas"),
ecological local olive oil and other delicacies.

The store's owner, Evelyna
Doulgeri, began the in 1999 with the
idea of offering special, quality products, something that she felt
was missing from the town of Molivos.
She linked up with some of the island's best women-run
cooperatives, as well as Milelia, a small handicraft industry and
obtained exclusive distribution of selected products for the island
of Lesvos such as ceramics, pottery etc.

Specialties include various types of preserves, including tomato,
fig or fig filled with nuts (the local psytalia) baked in a wooden
oven, ouzo with mastic and whole grapes (the local version of
grappa), a cherry liqueur, noodles (hilopites) and trahanas, local
ecological olive oil, vinegars with thyme and apricot rosemary and
peppers, ladotyri (the local white cheese) in sun-dried tomatoes and
various ouzo-accompanying mezedes (snacks or tidbits).
Other products list marinated anchovy, cookies made with resinated
wine, sour cherry beverage and macaroons, all in a well-designed
packaging.

An offer of exclusively seasonal products ensures both freshness
and variety.
Despite growing demand, Evelyna plans to keep the
production small-scale, fearing that a larger output would
eventually work against quality.
Considering the relatively isolated location of the store, response
has been steady and although sale slow down in the winter, she works
with orders and a clientele which has already been formed. The
market is still small but appreciation is great and traditional
products are in vogue. And this partly what makes Evelyna's venture
a great success.
EVELYN's PRODUCTS CAN ALSO BE FOUND AT THE NEWLY OPENED
ARTSHOP "EFHARIS"
AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE OLD MARKET, 50 M. AWAY FROM THE CONFERENCE
CENTER.
